Francesco Stancaro

Francesco Stancaro (* around 1501 in Mantua, † November 12, 1574 in Stopnica, Poland ) was an Italian theologian and reformer.

Life

Stancaro was born around 1501 in Mantua and joined a religious order and studied theology. In 1540 he turned in Padua to the Reformation, married, and was imprisoned by the Venetian authorities. Freedmen, he went in 1542 to Chiavenna in the evangelical community by Francesco Negri, where he was probably divorced. First he went to Vienna ( 1544), later to Basle, where he published a Hebrew grammar ( 1547). Stancaro went in 1548 over Transylvania to Poland, where he taught Hebrew at the University of Krakow. Because of his criticism of the veneration of saints, which he had expressed in a lecture on the Psalms, Stancaro was denounced in 1550 and set in Lipowitz in custody. After two Monten he was released and fled to Königsberg ( 1551 ) and taught at a school. Later he disputed with Andreas Osiander and wrote his " Apologia contra Osiandrum ". In the last years of his life he continued his travels and visited Poland, Hungary and Transylvania.
