Francisc Vaștag

Francisc " Feri" Vaştag (born 26 November 1968, Resita, Caras -Severin county ) is a former Romanian boxer and boxing trainer. He was a three-time amateur world champion.

Career as a boxer

Vaştag began boxing at CSM Resita where Vasile Bala was his first coach. He later joined yet for the clubs Dinamo Bucharest, Selena Bacau and Freedom Star Farul Constanţa (1993-1996). He boxed in the weight category to 71 kg at a height of 1.77 m.

Vaştag won in 1986, the European Junior Championships in Copenhagen with a final victory over Jörg ponds from the GDR in the light welterweight class. The following year he was in Havana junior welterweight champion. Attack Boxer Vaştag was considered horrors of Cubans, 1988, he defeated the eventual champion and Olympic champion Juan Carlos Lemus, 1989 Candelario Duvergel.

The Boxeuropameisterschaften 1989 he failed already in the first round on Bulgarians Borislav Abadsijew, but won a few months later in Moscow Amateur Welterweight World Championship, he beat in the finals there Siegfried Mehnert on points.

In 1990 he won at the Goodwill Games in Seattle and in 1991 he won bronze medalist, when he failed in the semifinals at the German Andreas Otto. Vaştag took 1992 as Halbmittelgewichtler for Romania at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in part, but lost in the quarterfinals against the Puerto Rican Anibal Acevedo.

1993 in Tampere and in Berlin in 1995 won Vaştag again the World Cup. He suggested there among other things each Markus Beyer and in the finale the Cuban Alfredo Duvergel, his record was four wins and one defeat against the. 1993 and 1996 he won the European title in 1996 with another win against Beyer, however, which he later succumbed a short time at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Then finished Vaştag with a record of 385 wins and 17 defeats his career.

After the End of career

Vaştag conducted from 2000 to 2002, the training of the Romanian Boxnationalmannschaft. He took over in early 2004, the Office again, but announced his contract on 28 April 2006. In November 2004 he was appointed vice-president of the Romanian boxing federation. On 28 January 2007 he was a candidate for the office of President of the Association, however, did not appear at the meeting, so that incumbent pack Obreja was re-elected.

Vaştag is the father of two sons. The older, Victor Vaştag (born 27 February 1990 in Resita ), debuted on 17th May 2008 in the first team by FCM Resita in a game of the second Romanian Football League.
