Francisco Fajardo

Francisco Fajardo (* 1524 in Isla Margarita, Nueva Esparta, † 1564 in Cumana ) was a conquistador who founded several villages in Venezuela.

He was the son of Lieutenant Francisco Fajardo and Isabel, an Indian of Guaiquerí ethnicity. In 1555, he went to the mainland to conquer the land of Caracas. He landed in Chuspa, but returned shortly thereafter to Margarita. Two years later he traveled back to the Caracas area, this time with his mother, who had connections with the tribes of the region, and with 100 Guaiquerí Indians.

In 1560, Fajardo founded the courtyard of San Francisco. However, the Indians of the region attacked the courtyard at the time. This had to be abandoned. Fajardo also founded the village of El Collado, where Caraballeda would arise later.

When Lope de Aguirre arrived to Margarita, Fajardo went there to defend the island. He went back to Caracastal. Since the Caribs further attacked his village and he got no support, he went back to Margarita. In 1564 he went to Cumana, where the judge Alonso Cobos captured him and had him executed.
