Franco Evangelisti (composer)

Franco Evangelisti ( born January 21, 1926 in Rome, † January 28, 1980 ) was an Italian composer, improviser and music theorist.

Life and work

Evangelisti studied composition with Daniele Paris, Rome and Harald Genzmer at the Academy of Music in Freiburg; he took 1952-1960 regular participant in the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt. At the invitation of Herbert Eimert 1956 he worked in the Electronic Music Studio of the WDR in Cologne. Hermann Scherchen in 1957 invited him to the studio of Experimental Electroacoustics of UNESCO in Gravesano one. In 1958 he inaugurated together with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luigi Nono one the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio in Warsaw, where he held the following year seminars on electronic music. Together with Francesco Pennisi and Aldo Clementi he founded in Rome in 1960, the association Nuova Consonanza, organized concerts and festivals.

As a radical followers of serialism he stood against the increasingly valued by him as restorative post-serial composition with skepticism. He therefore decided in 1962, the composition of activities in favor of a more scientific work to give up on a system of " syntactic and phonetic redesign ". In 1964 he also founded, with Ennio Morricone and other composers improvisational ensemble Gruppo di Nuova Improvvisazione Consonanza. After a stint in Berlin, he was appointed to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome as a lecturer.

Evangelistis includes work as a composer, when apart from the collective improvisations, only slightly more than a dozen compositions. Although his music in its haunting, edgy and yet mysteriously acting sonority, as well as in - especially for musical theater composition The Box ( 1962-63 ) and the derived therefrom Cinque strutture - flung use of electronic recordings has not lost any of their artistic relevance, it was until a few years in the concert world hardly present but is not currently being rediscovered and performed.
