François Jules Pictet de la Rive

François Jules Pictet de la Rive ( born September 27, 1809 in Geneva, † March 15, 1872 in Geneva) was a Swiss zoologist and palaeontologist.

He studied at first in Geneva and then at Georges Cuvier and Blainville in Paris. After his return to Geneva, he worked with Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame. In 1835 he was appointed professor of zoology and anatomy at the University of Geneva. Later he also taught geology and paleontology. His area of ​​research was the entomology and paleontology.

He was rector of the University of Geneva from 1847 to 1850 and from 1866 to 1868. He was for many years a member of the Geneva Cantonal Parliament, which he chaired in 1863 and 1864.

Pictet de la Rive was the cousin of the linguist Adolphe Pictet.
