François Pompon

François Pompon ( born May 9, 1855 in Saulieu, Côte-d'Or department, † May 6, 1933 in Paris) was a French sculptor.

Life

With 15 years Pompon went to a funeral director in Dijon in teaching. During this time he learned the basics of sculpture and attended evening the École des Beaux Arts ( Fine Arts Academy ). After five years, he settled in Paris, where, also worked there for a funeral home in Montparnasse and went in the evening to the École nationale supérieure des arts Décoratifs.

He fell on and was able to renovation and decoration work at the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) participate. During this time he met the sculptor Pierre -Louis Rouillard, a major influence on him. In 1882, Pompon Berthe Velain married. He worked on own small objects and developed his own style, with which he made the jury of the Salon de Paris attention. He eventually entered the services of Auguste Rodin, whose workshop he conducted for three years and coined.

From 1896 he worked for the then renowned sculptor René de Saint- Marceaux, until his death in 1916. The final breakthrough came at the age of 67 years with his Polar Bear, whom he several copies, first in plaster and then later in marble, made ​​. A copy is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, one at the Museum of Luxembourg and another in the Musée d' Orsay in Paris. As a special honor it was to join the Legion of Honor to part.
