Franconian Keuper-Lias Plains

The Franconian Keuper- Lias - land is a natural spatial feature unit group of the Southwest German cuesta land in Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia and, to a lesser extent in the Thuringian Landkreis Hildburghausen in the north. It forms within the Greater Region 2nd order of the South West German country levels, together with the south-west subsequent Swabian Keuper- Lias -Land a Great Region 3rd order.

As the name suggests, the term covers landscapes of the Keuper ( including the well known parts of the Keuper highlands Haßberge, Steigerwald and Franks height ) together and the Lias ( Black Jura) in Franconia. In addition, part of the foothills of the Franconian Alb, is present at the part Dogger ( Brauner Jura), the main unit group. Also includes parts of the former volcanic region Heldburger transition flock to the landscape.

The highest 689 m elevation of the main unit group is the singular Hesselnberg immediately north of the Swabian - Franconian and separating the Nordlinger Ries crater.

Location and boundaries

The Franconian Keuper- Lias country is bordered to the north and west by the dominated by limestone Gäulandschaften the Mainfränkisches plates, which are followed by the Neckar and Tauber- Gäuplatten in the southwest. In the southwest of the scenic and geologically similar Swabian Keuper- Lias - country follows.

In eastern directions the landscape merges with the Malm - plateau of the Franconian Alb, in the northeast follows the Oberpfälzisch - Obermainische hill country ( but especially the Obermainische hill country) as a buffer zone between the Franconian and Oberpfälzisch - Bayerischerem forest.

In the Franconian Keuper- Lias country are comparatively centrally, including the compression chamber Nuremberg and Fürth and Erlangen, north of the cities of Bamberg and in the north northeastern border area Coburg.
