Frank Crowe

Frank Crowe and Francis Trenholm Crowe ( born October 12, 1882 in Trenholmville, Estrie, Quebec, † February 26 1946 in Redding ( California)) was an American engineer. As a Chief Engineer and Senior Project Manager, he was involved in the construction of the Hoover Dam. During this time he was superintendent of Six Companies, the construction company that oversaw the construction project.

He was born in Trenholmville, attended the " Governor Dummer Academy", and studied at the University of Maine, where he in 1905 received a degree in Civil Engineering. The " Francis Crowe Society " at the University is named in his honor. Crowe began during a lecture by Frank Weymouth, a guest lecturer from the United States Bureau of Reclamation ( USBR ), an interest in the American West. He reported before the end of the lecture at a summer job. this job a 20 year long career began at the USBR, the the face of the American West changed. Crowe left in 1924, the Bureau of Reclamation to the construction company " Morrison - Knudsen " in Boise ( Idaho) to go. At work at the Arrow Rock Dam in Idaho Crowe introduced two techniques that are essential for the construction of large dams. The first was a pneumatic conveying system for transporting concrete and the second was a system of wire ropes, with which one could pump the concrete pneumatically conveyed to any part of the site. With this technique, Crowe built several of the large dams in the American West, including the Hoover Dam, Parker Dam 249 km below Hoover, the dams of Copper Basin and Gene Wash the Colorado Aqueduct and the Shasta Dam in Northern California. All of these dams were important, but not reaching the significance of the Hoover Dam.

Crowe in 1944 at its 81 km ² large ranch near Redding in California in retirement, where he died on February 26, 1946 of a heart attack.
