Shasta Dam

The Shasta Dam ( Shasta Dam English ) stands on the Sacramento River near the town of Shasta Lake near Redding in the U.S. state of California. It was built between 1938 and 1945. The reservoir is known as the place as Shasta Lake. The area is a popular recreation area.

Use

The Shasta Dam is part of the " Shasta and Trinity River Division " of the Central Valley Project of 1933, which started with funds from the "Emergency Relief Appropriation Act " 1935. The " Shasta and Trinity Division " was authorized in August 1955. The location of the dam was selected by the state of California. California but could not finance the project alone and asked for help from the American government.

The purpose of the " Central Valley Project " means the water supply and flood protection; two purposes, the Shasta Dam. The reservoir is also used for irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, recreation and enhancement of water quality.

Shut-off

The shut-off is a curved gravity dam made of concrete. The dam is 183 meters high and 1055 meters long, has a base width of 165.5 meters and a building volume of 4 million m³.

Hydroelectric power station

At the foot of the dam is a hydroelectric power plant. It has a hydraulic height of 100 meters and its five Francis turbines have a combined capacity of 610 MW. It is the fourth largest hydroelectric power station in California and the largest that is not a pumped storage plant. The water flows through five pipes with diameters of 4.5 meters. At full power flow through 85 cubic meters of water per second. The electricity is generated at a voltage of 13,800 volts and transformed for transmission to consumers in California to 230,000 volts.

Increase

In September 2004, a law was introduced, according to which an increase of the dam should be explored. Proponents argue that there is an urgent need for water. Opponents such as the Winnemem Wintu Indian tribe - think this is a dangerous for the environment plan and think that measures to save water should be explored more meaningful.
