Frank O'Farrell

Francis O'Farrell ( born October 9, 1927 in Cork) is a former Irish footballer and football coach.

Career

Playing career

O'Farrell started his playing career at Cork United in Ireland. In 1948 he moved to West Ham United. In 1950, the left midfielder made ​​his debut at West Ham. He spent six years in London. During this time he also gave his team debut for the Irish national football team against Austria, eight more missions followed. In November 1956, the Irish went on to Preston North End. O'Farrell played until his retirement in late 1961 in Preston. In 1961 he was a last minute player-coach at FC Weymouth.

Coaching career

He had the first coaching job at FC Weymouth as player-coach. In May 1965 he became the first head coach. He was manager of Torquay United. After three years in Torquay we went to Leicester City. He remained faithful to Leicester City in 1971. This year came an offer from Manchester United, which accepted O'Farrell immediately, but the time at United was overshadowed by the excesses of the superstar George Best, which undermined his authority as a coach. In December 1972, he gave up and went to Cardiff City, which he left in 1973 to Asia a year later. O'Farrell was coach of Iran as the first Western Europeans. The Irishman was with the Persians in 1976 Asia Cup winner. After his stay in Iran, he came back to Torquay United, where he alternately worked from 1976-1983 as a manager or coach. His retirement spent the Irishman since that time in Torquay.
