Club history

Founded in 1880, PNE 1888 was one of the founding members of the English Football League and won the first league championship ( 1888-89 ). The club was also the first person to score a double: FA Cup (1889, 3-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers ) and championship in one season. This double was more than exceptional since the championship was won without a single defeat - something that could be repeated in the upper leagues until the 2003/04 season with Arsenal. The Cup was won even without cash conceding a single goal. During this time the team under the name " The Invincibles " was known ( The Unbreakable ) and was characterized by a collection of local and Scottish players who were famous for their eccentric behavior. 1890 managed to repeat the success of last year in the championship.

Preston North End played in the top two divisions of the Football League without interruption until 1970. In 1938, Preston won for the second time the FA Cup ( against Huddersfield Town 1-0). For this year also comes the currently effective attendance record of the Lilywhites, as on April 23 against Arsenal were 42 684 spectators. In 1970 the North End for the first time in the Third Division from, but came as a Master 1970/71 in this league right back. However, the club could not hold his position and rose again in 1985 in the Football League Fourth Division. During the 1990s, Preston was revived by manager David Moyes and made it up into the Football League Championship. Until the summer of 2006 the club was successfully trained by the former Motherwell boss Billy Davies, but then moved to Derby County. With him, Preston finished second in the Football League Championship 2004/ 05 with 75 points 5th place and therefore had the chance to reach the Premier League in the play- offs. The first leg in the semi-finals they won at home against Derby County 2-0, the second leg was 0-0. In the final in Cardiff Preston North End West Ham United was defeated 0-1, thus missing out on promotion. A year later reached Preston in fourth again the playoffs, but failed in the semis at Leeds United.

Due to a 22 place in the 2010/11 season the club was relegated after seven years in the Football League One. After a less than satisfactory start to the League One 2011/12 coach Phil Brown was released on December 14, 2011 and interim basis replaced by Graham Alexander and David Unsworth.
