History

The establishment of the FAZ in 1949 goes to a decision of the Economic Policy Society ( Wipog ) back, one founded two years earlier association of entrepreneurs who wanted to see their interests more in public. Founding editor of the FAZ were Hans Baumgarten, Erich Dombrowski, Karl Korn, Paul Sethe and Erich Welter. Some editors of the FAZ worked previously at the 1943 Prohibited Frankfurter Zeitung and the Allgemeine Zeitung Mainz. The first issue of the newspaper was published on November 1, 1949 On the cover of this issue statement, under the heading " newspaper for Germany ". "Our readers now have the first issue of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on. This sheet continues the journalistic work that has been started in Mainz with the ' Allgemeine Zeitung '. But it ties both the start of a new work. "

According to its own description, the newspaper does not see as the direct successor of the Frankfurter Zeitung. So you could read in the first issue: " From the fact that some of our employees have formerly the editorial board of the Frankfurter Zeitung ' belongs, has often been closed, here the attempt will made to succeed shaft of this sheet. Such an assumption ignores our intentions. Like everyone, we too have admired the high quality of this sheet; But ... the respect for an outstanding performance does not mean the desire to copy them. " Frankfurter Zeitung The title, however, was trademarked by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for themselves. Years later, the FAZ brand was protected.

Until 30 September 1950, the FAZ was printed in Mainz. A first request to let the FAZ produce in the land leased from the Frankfurter Rundschau Societäts printing company, there were in 1949, but declined the reinstated in his rights as a co-owner of the print shop and the Frankfurter Zeitung Kurt Simon from this. The editors Erich Welter and Paul Sethe had been too heavily involved in the sense of Nazi objectives. After all, you brought it but ready to leave from the fall of 1950 to establish the FAZ in the Societäts printing company. In 1987 a new building was in the editorial Heller Hofstraße completed by the architect AC Walter has planned. In 1989, the Conclusion Foundation, the majority of Societäts printing company.

The makers of the FAZ ( and many readers ) fought a long time against a revision of the rather plain, quiet appearance. Title images in the FAZ traditionally remained the exception and the introduction of color information graphics and photographs was controversial. Since 5 October 2007, the newspaper is published in an optically revised, more modern presentation: it accounted for among other things, the fracture - headings to the comments as well as the lines between the columns. The first page was a color cover image, as well as the pictures are kept in color in the inner part of the newspaper, if possible. Boxes with increasingly shorter notes to the individual keywords are used frequently. Thus, the editorial board responded to persistent circulation losses.

Since April 20, 2011, the FAZ is also available as ePaper on the iPad.

After an initial conversion on August 1, 1999 to the reformed spelling the editors returned after one year ( to August 1, 2000 ) back to the previous spelling. After the revisions of the regulations by the Council for German Orthography FAZ their spelling changed finally back towards the reform and prints since 1 January 2007, after a house orthography, based on the new German orthography, but with some modifications.

Through the interim insistence on the " proven" notation (which is 2005 Der Spiegel, the Axel - Springer -Verlag and the Süddeutsche Zeitung temporarily joined ) the editors wanted, among other things put pressure on the Council for German Orthography, the coarse in her eyes error of reform correct.
