Franklin River

The Franklin River is a river in south-west of the Australian state of Tasmania.

Geography

River

The river rises at Mount Hugel in Cheyne Range, located in the southeast part of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St. Clair National Park. From there, it flows first to the south and crosses the Lake Undine and Lake Dixon. East of Mount Gel uses the Franklin River run its course to the west and passes under the Lyell Highway to the west of Mount Aerosmith. He is located in the Franklin - Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

On the West Coast Range, near the southern tip of Lake Burbury, the flow is deflected to the southwest and follows the Engineers range. From the southern end of the Franklin River flows south and empties between settlements Grinings Landing and Gould's Landing in the Gordon River.

History

Was named the river after John Franklin, who was from 1836 to 1843 Governor of Tasmania.

In the 1980s, carried out a project with the aim to dam the river to one of the biggest environmental controversy in Australia. The plans to build the Franklin Dam were eventually dropped.
