František Ladislav Rieger

František Ladislav (Franz Ladislaus ) (since 1897) Freiherr von Rieger ( born December 10, 1818 in Semil, in Bohemia; † March 3, 1903 in Prague) was a Czech writer and politician.

Life

Rieger was the son of a miller in Semil. After training (including on Clementinum in Prague) and Matura 1853 he married Mary, the daughter of the historian Frantisek Palacky ( 1798-1876 ). Both had three children, in addition to the sisters Marie (1854-1895) and Libuse (1860-1930), the son nor the legal historian Bohuslav ( Bohus ) Freiherr von Rieger ( 1857-1907 ).

Rieger studied law at the University of Prague, received his doctorate in 1847 there as a doctor of law sciences, he was temporarily in the court service with simultaneous journalistic and political activities. In the revolutionary year of 1848, he was a member of the National Committee in Prague, participants in the Slav Congress and member of the Reichstag Kremsier. Rieger was a supporter of a federal reorganization of the Habsburg monarchy, at a young age also a writer and journalist in the Czech language.

During an economic study in Paris in 1849 and 1850 to 1851 for a longer stay in London, Rieger profiled as a political representative of the Czech people in the West. On his return to Prague, he was exposed to 1851 to 1860 political chicanes, but resigned in the 1860s, again emerged as one of the most influential Czech politician. In the so-called Rieger 's manifesto, he formulated in 1868 the Czech constitutional position and after the death of his father Frantisek Palacky in 1876, one of the leading personalities of the Old Czech Party, founded in 1860. He was from 1861 to 1871 and from 1878 to 1895 Member of the Bohemian Diet, 1861-1863 imperial parliaments and since 1897 a member of the manor. After the failure of his experiment carried along by a Bohemian compensation he retired from political life. He was among others in 1897 awarded the Order of the Iron Crown 2nd class.

Rieger was the author of economic writings, wrote in French: Les Slaves d'Autriche et le Magyars (Paris 1861, 1906, after his death in 1903, published in the Czech language ). Of importance and often cited 1859 he published, in conjunction with the bookseller and publisher owner Ignaz Leopold Kober Bohemian Nationalencyklopädie, the Slovník is naučný, published in ten volumes and a supplement band and was edited by Jakub Maly, one to today acclaimed reference book. When was the final constitution of the Old Czech Party after the October Diploma in 1860, belonged to Baron von Rieger and František Palacký to the executive committee, which published the journal Národní Listy. Rieger was also one of the drafters of the Czech declaration.
