Franz Christoph von Rothmund

Franz Christoph von Rothmund ( born December 28, 1801 in Dettelbach, † November 30, 1891 in Munich) was a German surgeon.

Life

Rothmund began studying philosophy and medicine in Würzburg. Here were of Doellinger from Textor and Johann Lukas Schönlein to his academic teachers. In Berlin he completed his studies with Karl von Graefe. In 1823 he was awarded his doctorate for Dr. med.

After his training, applied by Rothmund the rule court Miltenberg. He was Medical Officer in the Lower Franconian town. On 14 May 1829 he obtained the post of court physician and went to Volkach am Main. Here was his salary 450 florins, besides, he was paid in kind. In the coming years Rothmund spurred the professionalization of medicine in the town. In particular, during the cholera epidemic of 1835/1836 he strove to hygienic conditions.

In 1843 was appointed by Rothmund professor and director of the First Surgical Department to the Municipal Hospital Munich. Here he explored new methods of treatment, continued as one of the first physicians to a ether anesthesia. From the year 1848 he took over as part of the Supreme Medizinalkomitees the examination of young doctors. In the wars of 1866 and 1870/1871 had Rothmund as a military doctor. As a result, he was ennobled and won several medals.

In 1871 he became Professor Emeritus. Nevertheless, he has published several articles in professional journals and journals. In 1891 died of Rothmund at the age of 89 years. He is still regarded as the founder of modern surgery. Because of his achievements, he was awarded on July 13, 1873, the honorary citizenship of the city Volkach.

The ophthalmologist August von Rothmund was his son.
