Franz Georg Philipp Buchenau

Franz Georg Philipp Buchenau ( born January 12, 1831 in Kassel, † April 23, 1906 in Bremen ) was a German botanist and educator. His botanical author abbreviation is " Buchenau ".

Biography

Buchenau was the son of a bank clerk. He attended a secondary school and since 1845 the Polytechnic School in Kassel. From 1848 he studied at the University of Marburg and in 1850 at the Georg -August- University Göttingen, inter alia, botany, and he acquired with a botanical dissertation doctorate. He was then in the short term teacher at a private school in Hanau and after this closed tutor and teacher in Friedrichsdorf in today's high- Taunus district.

In 1855 he got a job as a substitute teacher at the high school citizens of Henry Graefe in the old town of Bremen. After the death of Graefe he took over the management of this now public school and received the title of professor. He walked by the Prussian pattern the school to a junior high school second order around with the name Junior High School in Old Town.

Buchenau wrote in 1862 a History book titled The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and its territory, in which he described the history and landscape of and around Bremen. In 1864 he was the co-founder of the Natural Science Association of Bremen, which he chaired from 1887 to 1902. He held numerous lectures and had a great reputation in Bremen. 1882 and 1900 he published his book on the History and between periods - in multiple editions - his most famous works with the titles of Bremen flora and fauna of the East Frisian Islands and other books on botany. For factory The plant kingdom by Adolf Engler, he contributed to " Tropaeolaceae " (1902 ), " Scheuchzeriaceae, Alismataceae et Butomaceae " (1903) and " Juncaceae " ( 1906). For the plant, the natural plant families of Engler and Prantl he wrote " Juncaginaceae, Alismaceae, Butomaceae " (Vol. 2, No. 1, 1889) and " Juncaceae " (Vol. 2, No. 5, 1887).

In 1902 he was ailing and put his school in 1903 resigned.

Honors

  • The book Austraße in Bremen- Sebaldsbrück was named after him.
  • Several species of plants from different families were named after him, such as Triglochin buchenaui ( Juncaginaceae ).
  • In 1866 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.
