Franz Ludwig von Erthal

Franz Ludwig Freiherr von Erthal ( born September 16, 1730 in Lohr am Main, † February 14, 1795 in Würzburg) was Prince-Bishop of Würzburg and Bamberg. He came from a dynasty of and Erthal. His older brother, Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal was the penultimate Elector - Archbishop of the archdiocese of Mainz.

Study and career

Erthal studied law and theology in Mainz, Würzburg, Vienna and Rome and then went into the cathedral chapter of Würzburg and Bamberg. He was appointed in 1763 by his predecessor, the then Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, president of the secular government of the Bishopric of Würzburg. Emperor Joseph II appointed him in 1768 to the Privy Imperial Council and the Visitor of the Imperial Chamber Court in Wetzlar. 1776, he was an imperial commissioner at the Diet of Regensburg.

Erthal as Bishop

From 1779 to his death he ruled in personal union the bishoprics of Bamberg and Würzburg prince-bishop very carefully. Erthal governed by the principle of all the subjects, but all by the Prince. He was imbued with the ideas of the Enlightenment and promoted the education of the clergy. In Bamberg he built the first modern hospital and introduced a first public social insurance. The University of Bamberg was under his government a professor of veterinary medicine. Politically, he was loyal to the House of Habsburg and held to Emperor Joseph II.

With all its pomp and Erthal verschmähenden type the days of a glamorous royal household were in the under his predecessor finally finished and equipped most gorgeous Würzburg Residence to an end. Unlike Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim Erthal was not fond of worldly pleasures, and at court, there were no hunts and opera performances more. The lottery he abolished because they destroy the character of the residence he had to remove images and joined the Court Theatre. The theater wardrobe he had to sell in favor of an orphanage.

Erthal was buried in Würzburg Kiliansdom.

Honors

  • Monument in Bamberg, first erected in the Cathedral Square in 1938 removed in 1959 erected in front of the now former AOK now transferred today Synagogue Square, about 1985 in Pödeldorfer street in front of the new AOK.
  • In his birthplace, Lohr am Main, the local high school was named after him.
  • In 1965 the New School in Bamberg in Franz -Ludwig -Gymnasium was renamed.
