Frederica of Baden

Princess Friederike Dorothea Wilhelmina of Baden ( born March 12, 1781 Karlsruhe, † September 25, 1826 in Lausanne) was the wife of the Swedish king Gustav IV Adolf 1797-1809 Queen of Sweden.

Life

Friederike was the daughter of the Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig of Baden and the Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt (the " in-law of Europe" ). She was a younger sister of Queen Caroline of Bavaria and the Russian Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna. Her father, the hereditary Prince of Baden and son of the Margrave Karl Friedrich in 1801 in an accident in Sweden killed when he was on his way home after visiting his daughter.

1797, married in Stockholm, King Gustav IV Adolf and became queen. Together with her husband she was overthrown in 1809. The family went to live in Baden. Since her husband, however, did not want to stay there, the couple divorced in 1812.

The places Fredrika (1799 ), Dorotea (1799 ) and Vilhelmina ( 1804) in the historical province of Lapland have been named in honor of her so.

Friederike and Gustav IV Adolf had the following children:

  • Gustav Wasa (1799-1877), Crown Prince of Sweden was, later, after the fall of his father the title " Prince of Wasa " ∞ 1830 Louise of Baden ( 1811-1854 ) ( granddaughter of Karl Ludwig)
  • Sophie Wilhelmine (1801-1865) ∞ 1819 Grand Duke Leopold of Baden ( half-brother of Karl Ludwig)
  • Karl Gustav (1802-1805), Grand Duke of Finland
  • Amalie Marie (1805-1853), Princess of Sweden
