Frederick I, Count of Berg-Altena

Count Friedrich von Berg - Altena (* in the 12th century; † 1198 or 1199 ) was the son of Eberhard I of Berg- Altena. His year of birth is unknown. However, since he appears as ruler from 1173 in appearance, he must have been born at the latest in the years around 1155. Presumably, the difference in age to his brother born in 1150 Arnold of Altena was not particularly big. Friedrich is the father of Adolf I of the Mark, and thus the progenitor of the line of the Counts of the Mark.

Approximately around 1170 acquired Friedrich von Berg- Altena the Oberhof Mark, whose possessions included a strategic well-placed hills, the later castle hill in the marrow. The Oberhof also had a private church, the Pankratiuskirche, which also passed into Frederick's possession.

Friedrich married around 1198/99 (probably much sooner ) Alveradis of Krieckenbeck, daughter of Count Rainer. His sons were Count Adolf I (probably born around 1182 ) from the marrow and Friedrich. Both can the Father, either before birth or shortly thereafter died, have, at best, met a very young age. However, Friedrich had provided for the welfare of his son Adolf. To his credit, he had built from 1198 on the hill a castle, the Mark Burg. It is also to suspect that Friedrich after inheritance wanted to exert control over the possessions of his brother, which the located very close to the castle and town had made Nienbrügge his residence.

After Frederick died around the turn of the century, his son was called as early as 1202, Adolf von der Mark.
