Frederick V, Count of Zollern

Frederick V of Zollern († May 24, 1289 at Burg Hohenzollern ), called " the Illustrious " was a Count of Zollern.

Life

Frederick was the son of Count Friedrich IV of Zollern from his marriage to Elizabeth of Abensberg and succeeded his father as Count of Zollern 1255.

He earned the advocacy of the Beuron and 1259 was the founder of the monastery Stetten im Gnadental. The Foundation was expanded in 1267 with his wife again. In the same year the monastery Stetten was also intended to Erbgrablege of Hohenzollern. The grave lay was probably connected by an underground passage of Hohenzollern Castle. According to legend, Frederick is said to have founded the monastery to Emperor Frederick II conciliatory to vote because he had failed him lead the army. With the related Swabian Counts of Hohenberg Friedrich was in constant clashes, which were only 1286 resolved through mediation by King Rudolf of Habsburg. The disputes with the High salvors had a long history, particularly in 1267, the situation escalated.

The possessions of the Swabian Hohenzollern formed a fairly closed territory. Remote property had been sold for the most part anyway. Friedrich ruled the territory of the Principality of Hohenzollern - Hechingen later, later Württemberg Oberamt Balingen, the rule of Mülheim and land between Hechingen and Tübingen. Balingen was the Hohenzollern in 1403 lost by sale to the Württemberg. No closed area was present in the direction of the sphere of influence of the Counts of Hohenberg. Here intermingle the possessions. Under Frederick, who was described as pious and respected, Zoller count reached a peak of power. Due to the division of the country among his sons Friedrich VI. and Frederick I lost the actual county considerable importance.
