Frederick William Hope
Frederick William Hope ( born January 3, 1797 in London, † April 15, 1862 ) was a British entomologist and founder of the so-called "Hope Professorship " at the University of Oxford.
Life and work
Frederick William Hope was the second son of John Thomas Hope and Ellen Hester Mary. In 1817 he started his education at Christ 's College, Cambridge where he graduated as BA in 1820 and 1823 M. A. took off. In the Kurate of Frodesley Hope was ordained.
During the study period Hope visited among others the lectures of John Kidd, which aroused his interest in zoology and entomology in particular. He developed into a successful collector of English insects. His findings found, for example, the entrance to the works of James Francis Stephens and William Yarrell. He also provided contributions to John Forbes Royles Natural History of the Himalayan Mountains.
Hope was an early member of the Linnean Society of London and was among the first members of the Zoological Society of London, founded in 1826. In 1833 he was one of the founding members of the Entomological Society of London, and stood her from 1835 to 1836 and from 1845 to 1846 as president before. On June 5, 1834, he was finally elected to the Royal Society. For the publications of societies, he wrote numerous articles.
Hope began his collection to exotic insects to expand and gave catalogs of its collections, for example the Lucanidae and Hemiptera out. His most important work was The coleopterist 's Manual 1838 to 1840, published in three volumes. Due to his failing health, he often held in the warmer parts of Europe, as in Naples and Nice, on. There he expanded his collection to include marine animals such as fish and crustaceans.
Under the condition that the collection would remain together, he gave in August 1849 his entomological collection and its natural history library of the University of Oxford. In the following years, this collection was supplemented by further donations of Hope. The "Hope Entomological Collections" are now part of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.
1855 awarded him the University of Oxford in the title of honorary doctor. Hope founded in 1861 at the University of Oxford Professor of Zoology and nominated John Obadiah Westwood as the first "Hope professor ".
From 1835 entered into with Ellen Meredith Hope's marriage no children were born.
