Royal Entomological Society

The Royal Entomological Society of London, former name Entomological Society of London, is a scientific society devoted to the study of insects is dedicated to. She has a leading international role in the study of insects, dissemination and publication of information on insects and for communication between entomologists worldwide.

The company was founded in 1833 as the Entomological Society of London. She had several precursors starting with the Society of Entomologists of London.

History of establishment

The foundation of the company began with a meeting of "gentlemen and friends of entomological science", on 3 May 1833, the British Museum, at the invitation of Nicholas Aylward Vigors, chaired by John George Children. In attendance were Reverend Frederick William Hope, William Yarrell, John Edward Gray, James Francis Stephens, Thomas Horsfield, GT Rudd and George Robert Gray. Adrian Hardy Haworth letters from George Bennett (1804-1893) and John Curtis were read, who welcomed the event and supported their cause.

Those present formed the Society for the Advancement of the Science of Entomology in all its branches and under the name of " Entomological Society of London ". J. G. Children, F.W. Hope, J. F. Stephens, W. Yarrell and G. Rudd were elected to the board, with GR Gray as secretary. J. G. Children was elected the first president and William Kirby as honorary chairman for life. In another session likely on May 2, 1833, the members met at the Thatched house Tavern, in St James ' s Street. During the meeting, George Robert Waterhouse was appointed administrator of the library and files. In addition, the following foreign members were co-opted: Johann Christoph Friedrich Klug, Wilhem de Haan, Victor Audouin, Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst, Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann, Carl Eduard Hammerschmidt and Alexandre Louis Lefebvre de Cérisy ( 1798-1867 ). William Blandell Spence (1813-1900) was tasked with the contact with the other European entomologists to keep.
