Freixenet one of the largest and most famous Cava producers in Spain, west of Barcelona in Catalonia is situated. The company produces Cava similar to the French Moët & Chandon in quality, quantity and value.

History

Freixenet was established with the merger of two Spanish families who already had a long tradition in wine production: on the one hand, the Ferrers, owners of La Freixeneda, a manor of the 12th century in Sant Quintí de Mediona in the Alt Penedès, and on the other hand Salas, winemakers since 1830 and founder of Casa Sala Sant Sadurní d' Anoia, a wine exporter to Latin America.

The name Freixenet resulted from the fact that the estate of groves full of ash ( Catalan Freixe ) was surrounded. The owner Pedro Ferrer Bosch was therefore called by the local people of El Freixenet.

Towards the end of the 19th century married Dolores Sala Vivé, the granddaughter of the founder of Casa Sala, Pedro Ferrer Bosch of La Freixeneda. At that time Spain had to watch the gradual loss of its colonies and had destroyed the grapes loss by the phylloxera plague, the red vines in Europe. Inspired by the success of the Champagne encouraged Codorníu and other the vineyard owner to reinstate reinforced white grapes like Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel · lo for sparkling wine production. These grapes are still the primary grapes of Cava, though some producers are experimenting with the use of Champagne grapes of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

As a result, the newlyweds joined with Dolores ' father together for the family Sala to produce sparkling wines in the traditional way as well Champenoise method.

Since 1941 Freixenet produces its flagship product, the Cava Carta Nevada and since 1974 the Cava Cordon Negro. Approximately 95 % of Spain's total Cava production comes from the Catalan town of Sant Sadurní d' Anoia.
