Classic French division of the Alps

The French Alps are the French part of the Alps, the southwestern part of the Western Alps. The highest peak is 4,810 m high Mont Blanc.

They include according to the Alpine Convention an area of ​​40,802 km ² with 1,749 municipalities. They are located in the regions of Rhône -Alpes and Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Subsequent to the southwest hill areas Massif des Maures and the Bouches -du -Rhône ( the Rhone estuary ) are now generally no longer counted among the Alps.

Structure

Classically, it is divided into the Alps of France - quite non-specific - in:

  • French High Alps, in the central area as the Swiss- Italian border
  • Maritime Alps, Alpine ridge and foothills to the Mediterranean
  • French Alps, the western ridges and hills against the Rhône towards

Under climatic and regional point of view are divided roughly:
