French Community of Belgium

Fringe Gemeenschap van België ( Dutch) Communauté française de Belgique ( French)

The French Community of Belgium ( Communauté française de Belgique French, Dutch Fringe Gemeenschap van België ) is one of three communities of the Kingdom of Belgium and thus a constituent state of the Belgian Federal State.

The other two communities are the Flemish Community and the German speaking Community.

Renaming

On 25 May 2011 the name French Community of Belgium has been replaced by a unilateral decision of the Parliament of the French Community of Belgium by the name Fédération Wallonie- Bruxelles ( Federation Wallonia - Brussels). This provoked the criticism of Flemish politicians who saw a step towards the annexation of Brussels by the French Community in the express emphasis of Brussels in the new name. The Prime Minister Kris Peeters, the Flemish Region said that he could not recognize the organs of this Federation, since it would have no constitutional legitimacy. That is why the French-speaking politicians, however, care little and now the situation is such that the name French Community of Belgium is indeed in the Constitution of the country, in the publications of the French Community Wallonia -Brussels Federation, the name is used throughout. Along with the new name, a new logo was introduced. Instead of the red Gockel on a yellow background is to come in the colors red, yellow and blue for use in future a logo of three stylized letters (FWB ).

However, these FWB must be well considered rather than a political- tactical instrument of French-speaking politicians. An actual support among the population of Brussels is missing this federation most likely, as a study conducted in March 2013 survey showed. After that, 68 percent of Brussels spoke out in case of splitting of Belgium for an independent Brussels, whereas only 26 percent of the Brussels itself could heat up for a federation with Wallonia.

The so-called Federation Wallonia -Brussels, however, should not be confused with the Walloon Region and equated in any way.

Geographic area of responsibility

The French Community of Belgium is responsible for both the largest ( French-speaking ) part of the Walloon Region and the French-speaking part of the population of the Brussels- Capital Region. You is not responsible for the residents of the area of the German-speaking Community, which is located in the Walloon Region and is also not responsible for the Dutch-speaking part of the population in the Brussels- Capital Region.

The French Community of Belgium has a parliament (French Parlement de la Communauté française de Belgique) and this responsible government. The Parliament of the French Community of Belgium (94 MPs) consists of the French-speaking members of the Parliament of the Walloon Region (75) and in addition a corresponding proportional to population group of deputies of the Parliament of the Brussels -Capital Region together (19 out of 72 deputies ). The German deputies of the Parliament of the Walloon Region are not members of the Parliament of the French Community of Belgium, as the German -speaking community has its own parliament.
