Frieder Bernius

Frieder Bernius (* 1947 in Ludwigshafen, Germany) is a German choral conductor and conductor.

Life

Frieder Bernius 1947, born in Ludwigshafen district Oppau, as the second of four children of the Protestant pastor Helmut Bernius and his wife, the church musician Inge. After graduating from the classical languages ​​Karl- Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim, he studied music and musicology at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and at the University of Tübingen. Already in his first year, 1968, he founded the Stuttgart Chamber Choir. After his focus was in the early years, particularly on the interpretation of a cappella music from the 19th and 20th century, he expanded the repertoire soon on the entire choral music.

Since 1977 Bernius collaborates with leading orchestras in Germany. He made guest productions with the radio choirs of the SDR, NDR, WDR and the RIAS Berlin. From the mid- 1980s he turned increasingly to early music and historical performance practice.

In 1987 he founded the International Festival Days of Early Music in Stuttgart, which he heads today (as Stuttgart Festival of Baroque). In the years 1990, 1995 and 1999, he directed the World Youth Choir of Musical Youths and IFCM. In 1991 he founded the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra and the Stuttgart Philharmonic Classical. In 1998 he received an honorary professorship in Mannheim. In 2000, he was the head of the European Youth Choir, the same year he was co-founder and artistic director of choral works Ruhr (until 2003). Since 2000 he is head of the biennial Summer Academy in Winnipeg / Canada. 2009 Bernius was elected president of the International Johann Nepomuk David Society.

Bernius is invited to give master classes, competitions, festivals and guest conductor around the world. He heads the Stuttgart Chamber Choir, Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra, the Classical Philharmonic Stuttgart and the Stuttgart court orchestra. At Leopold Mozart Centre in Augsburg, he teaches the subject oratory. Frieder Bernius lives in Backnang.
