Friedrich Karl Theodor Zarncke

Friedrich Karl Theodor Zarncke (* July 7, 1825 in Zahrensdorf, † October 15, 1891 in Leipzig ) was a German specialist in German.

Biography

Zarnckes father was a country clergyman in Mecklenburg. After leaving school in Rostock Zarncke studied from 1844 at the local university, but moved to Leipzig, where he heard especially Gottfried Hermann and Moriz principal a year later. In 1846 he went to Berlin, where he was influenced primarily by Karl Lachmann.

In 1850 he was back in Leipzig, where he founded the "Literary Journal for Central Germany " and his habilitation in 1852. In 1854 he was appointed extraordinary, in 1858 ordinary professor of German language and literature against the resistance of Heinrich Wuttke, the scientific work Zarnckes was not sufficient for the transport. His review magazine included nearly all fields of knowledge. She was at that time also held in high esteem. In the Manuscripts Department of the University Library of Leipzig is the estate 249 Friedrich Zarncke. This also probably all correspondence are preserved in addition to a wide variety of internal university matters that related to his magazine. After his death his son Edward Zarncke initially led on the editorial business. Zarncke was 1869/70, 1870/71 and 1881/82 Rector of the University of Leipzig. He participated in 1878 in the founding of the fraternity Plessavia Leipzig.

Zarncke had for the University of Leipzig's history other than the purely technical side as his contributions to the Goethe research to Sebastian Brant, among others also document volumes on the history of the University of Leipzig issued since its foundation. For the Leipzig University history, they are of fundamental importance.

He was a member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences. For the tradition of the older Academy history in Leipzig, it is very important that Zarncke docked a photo album of Academy members and that this collection was also obtained. It is located partly in the University Archives Leipzig and partly in the manuscript department of the University Library of Leipzig.

His grave stone is located on the Old St. John's Cemetery Dept. V in Leipzig.
