Fritz Richard

Fritz Richard, actually Josef Richard Löwit, (born 6 January 1870 in Chotebor; † February 9, 1933 in Berlin) was an Austrian actor.

Life

The trained stenographer took acting lessons in Vienna at the Theater School Pauline Loewe. His first engagement he joined in 1886 in Mülheim. He then played at various German and Austrian provincial theaters.

From Metz in 1905 he made his way to Berlin, where he worked mainly at the Deutsches Theater and the Lessing Theater. He belonged to the ensemble of Max Reinhardt. He was particularly effective in Karl Schönherr's devil of a woman as well as everybody. From 1913 worked with Richard in numerous silent films.

Richard married his fellow student Friederike Raithel 1898, under the name Frida Richard was later also active as an actress. Fritz Richard, who was a Jew, died shortly after coming to power of Hitler in Berlin, and after his death came up rumors about an assassination of the actor.
