FS Class E.424

The E.424 series is a series of electric locomotives Italian Ferrovie dello Stato.

History

The E.424 series was purchased in the 1940s for the transport of light passenger trains. Because of the partially poor condition of the superstructure, the locomotives had to have a minimum axle load. From 1986 to 1993, 105 machines were subjected to a conversion. They were upgraded for reversible and top speed of 120 km / hr.

Technical Features

The locomotives were distinguished by their very good curve. Originally equipped with multiple unit control and front doors to transition to other vehicles, these devices were removed soon due to technical deficiencies. 105 locomotives were given a 78 -pin cable to the push-pull train for use on push-pull trains. The machine had an automatic switching mechanism.

Overall, the locomotives were delivered in four series in which two different engines were used. The gear ratio is not at all identical, so some locomotives from the outset at 120 km / h reached.

As at that time in the FLYSERVER all locomotives were equipped with a contactor control. In contrast to other railways automatic contactor control " Avviatore Automatico " was installed. Thus, the engineer only had the desired interconnection of the motors ( series / parallel / mixed) set. At the transition between the series resistor to the motor was automatically continues to be reduced down to zero. Another way the cruise control set the field weakening means switchable series resistors in the exciter circuit dar.

Use

Some of the modernized copies are still used today in passenger traffic, but increasingly replaced by the new E.464.
