FS Class E.464

The E.464 series is an electric locomotive that was procured from 1999 ADtranz (now Bombardier ) by the Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato (Trenitalia ), the Ferrovie Emilia Romagna ( FER ) and the Trasporto ferroviario Toscano (TFT).

The locomotives will be manufactured at Bombardier's plant in Vado Ligure under the company's internal designation TRAXX P160 DCP. By February 2013 699 units of this series were delivered. In November 2013, Trenitalia announced that Bombardier another series of 29 locomotive of the series were E464, ordered, an investment of approximately 300 million euros. These are to be used in the regions of Lazio, Veneto and Liguria, along with 150 new cars of the type Vivalto.

Proper way is, however, not to locomotives but to power cars.

Technical Features

Since the machines are exclusively used with push-pull trains, they also have only one cab. At the other end there is a Mehrzweck-/Gepäckabteil, an auxiliary cab for shunting and an interchange with rubber bead. The E.464 series used trucks and gear similar to those of the 101 series of the Deutsche Bahn, the drive takes place but with binary -phase asynchronous traction motors. The locomotive body was developed by SLM, the power electronics in GTO technology is related to that of the SBB RABDe 500, as well as the vehicle control.

The first machines had both sides conventional Zug-/Stoßeinrichtungen in their delivery. Now, however, almost all vehicles were equipped at the cab end with an automatic Scharfenberg couplers. Only on the wagon train to the side facing the screw coupling was maintained. The locomotives are equipped with both the conventional Italian shuttle train ( 78 condotta policy ), as well as with the TCN Wendezug and multiple unit control. Thus, they can be used flexibly with all vehicles of regional traffic.
