Fyodor Rokotov

Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov (Russian Фёдор Степанович Рокотов, scientific transliteration Fedor Stepanovic Rokotov; * to 1736 Woronzowo ( today Moscow ). . † 12 Dezemberjul / December 24 1808greg in Moscow) was a Russian painter of the Rococo period, which specializing in portraiture.

Life

Fyodor Rokotov was born into a family of serfs, which belonged to the Repnins. Much in his biography remains unknown. He studied at the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and was able to be freed in the late 1750s from serfdom. After that, he was a sought-after portrait painter, who received orders from the highest circles of Russian society. In 1765 he was elected Academician, but not long worked as a professor in the Academy, as it collided with his painting. In the same year he moved to Moscow, where he remained until his death. There he held a variety of jobs and rose to become the best portrait painters of his time.

Among his most famous portraits include the portrait of Alexandra Strujskaja (1772 ), which sometimes is called the Russian Mona Lisa and recognized as part of the most famous artworks of Russian painting of the 18th century. Furthermore Rokotov painted the portrait of Countess Elisabeth Santi ( 1785), and the lady in pink dress ( 1770 ). Rokotov shunned formal jobs with many awards and decorations. Instead, he was one of the first Russian painter who developed the psychological portrait, with much attention for optical and atmospheric effects.
