Gabriel de Avilés, 2nd Marquis of Avilés

Gabriel de Avilés Iturbide y del Fierro, Second Marquis of Avilés (* 1735 in Barcelona, † September 19, 1810 in Valparaíso, Chile ) was a Spanish officer and colonial administrator in South America.

Biography

From a young age Aviles joined the Spanish army and was sent in 1768 as an instructor for cavalry recruits to Chile. After two years' residence in Arauco, he was appointed to Peru to work as a sub- inspector of the army. He married there, Mercedes del Risco y Ciudad, which enjoyed a very good reputation in Peru.

1780 led José Gabriel Condorcanqui to a rebellion that the whole viceroyalty would soon be able to shake. After initial successes of the insurgents Avilés was now sent with the rank of colonel to Cusco in order to keep the city can. One day before the start of the siege met Avilés in Cusco. The situation in the city turned out to be difficult as possible for the Spaniards: 60,000 men were over against them outside the city walls and you had to fear that the Indians could also fall within the city walls to arms.
