Gaetano Previati

Gaetano Previati ( born August 31, 1852 in Ferrara, † June 21, 1920 in Lavagna, Genoa Province) was an Italian painter. He is one of the main representatives of symbolism and coined later, together with Giacomo Balla Italian Futurism.

Life

Gaetano Previati was the second son of a master baker from Ferrara. He studied art history at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. In 1880 he opened his first atelier and dealt mainly with portraiture. Through the influence of Giovanni Segantini Previati took later to the sacred themes. At the end of his life he painted mainly still lifes and landscapes.
