Gaithersburg is to Baltimore, Frederick and Rockville is the fourth largest city in the state of Maryland, United States. The population was recorded in the census 2010 59.933 inhabitants in an area of 26.3 km ² which gives a very high population density of nearly 2,300 people per km ².

The area in which the present Gaithersburg is located was originally called " History Town". After a settler named Benjamin Gaither was built there in 1802 the first house, the place was named after him Gaithersburg. 1850 was a railway line, built on efforts of the Gaithers, to Gaithersburg.

In scientific circles Gaithersburg is known by the resident National Institute of Standards and Technology ( NIST).
