Free will

Strawson believes that people in no case can have free will, regardless of whether determinism is true or not. His position is so similar that has the term " hard incompatibilism " marked by Derk Pereboom, for the latter.

His argument starts with the question of "are people ever ultimately - in a not only causal but also moral, ie? Praise and blame justifiable sense - accountable for their actions " and denies it as follows:

Strawson concludes: Our choices are determined by our character - and possibly also by ( indeterministic ) Random events for which we are no more responsible but, as for our genetic heritage and the experiences that we have made. This also applies to our past decisions that have helped to shape our present character. What we are is " ultimately - to the smallest detail - a matter of luck ." To reward actions, respectively. to punish them, was therefore " exactly just" how people ascribe to their hair color or face shape reward or punishment.

Panpsychism

In the discussion about the mind-body problem Strawson believes that the position of strict physicalism necessarily einfordere a panpsychistische perspective, and thus has a significant share in the rising again in the 21st century interest in panpsychism in the philosophy of mind.
