Gandhinagar ( Gujarati: ગાંધીનગર, Gāndhīnagar ) is the capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. It has about 208,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ) and is the administrative seat of the district of Gandhinagar. It is named after Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in Gujarat, named.

Gandhinagar is located on the Sabarmati River, about 30 kilometers north of Gujarat's largest city, Ahmedabad. It consists of 30 sectors. Similarly, the model of American cities ( avenues and streets ), there are two categories of intersecting streets - those with letters ( K, KH, G, GH, CH, CHH and JA ) and those with numbers ( 1-7 ). The resulting blocks between the streets are designated with sector numbers, the intersections wear as a name is a combination of the names of the intersecting streets (KH1, KH2, G1, G2, G3, etc.).

As in 1960, the state of Bombay was divided into the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, initially Ahmedabad was determined as the interim capital. Was then built Gandhinagar to Chandigarh as the second capital plan since India's independence in 1970 and the capital of Gujarat was transferred here.

Gandhinagar has several educational and research institutions. Among the few attractions of the city is the Akshardham temple complex.

In a massacre in the Akshardham Temple on 26 September 2002, 30 people came by two armed men killed and nearly 100 were injured. The National Security Guard was able to overpower the terrorists only after 13stündiger siege.
