Garanoir

Garanoir is a red grape variety. It is a new breed of 1970 by Dominique Maigre and André Jaquinet Federale de Recherches of the station en Production Vegetale de Changins, the Swiss Federal Research Station for Plant Production ( Agroscope RAC Changins ) in Pully. It is a hybrid of the red variety Gamay and the white variety Reichensteiner. Breeding goal was to win a vine with the qualities of a Gamay or Pinot noir in earlier maturity. The early maturing variety is mainly fungi and rot resistant and provides wines of dark red, strong color, which are mild in flavor and have an aroma of blackberries. At high maturity the reds lacks important acid ( acid (wine) ) and thus to structure.

It is in Switzerland ( about 198 hectares area under surface, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG ) and grown to a small extent in Württemberg.

The original name Granoir may not be used for legal reasons. From the same intersection the variety Gamaret emerged.
