Garden Ridge is a city in Comal County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on Interstate 35, about 20 km southwest of New Braunfels, in the south of the county in the central southeast Texas and has a total area of 20.8 km ², of which 0.4 km ² water surface.

History

As Garden Ridge on April 4, 1972 with a population of 230, was awarded city status, it was the first city status in the County for 127 years. The population increased from 647 in 1980 to 1,450 in 1990, 1,882 in 2000. Population growth may be due to the central location of the city between Austin and San Antonio.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,882 people in 704 households and 622 families. The population density was 92.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 93.84 % White, 2.23 % African American, 0.11 % Native American, 1.12 % Asian, 0.11 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 1.43 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.17% were of mixed descent, and 7.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 704 households 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 83.7 % were married couples living together. 3.8 % had a female householder with no husband, and 11.6% were non-families. 9.2% of all households were single-person households and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size amounted to 2.85.

22.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 4.1 % from 18 to 24, 18.3% 25-44, 40.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.9 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 47 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 90,184, and the median income for a family $ 92,269. Males have a median income of $ 68,750 versus $ 37,708 for females. The per capita income was $ 40,201. 1.8 % of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 1.3 % have children under the age of 18 and 4.0 % of those 65 or older.
