The Gardiners Creek (originally Kooyongkoot Creek ) is a river in the southern Australian state of Victoria. It runs through the eastern districts of Melbourne and flows into the Yarra River.

In a few places on its banks there are still original lowland forest, but mostly it runs through suburbs and so the stream was regulated in the same way as other streams in the urban area, such as Mullum Mullum Creek, or the Koonung Creek. The Gardiners Creek Trail follows the creek for nearly its entire length.

Origin of the name

The creek was originally called Kooyongkoot. This is a word from the language of the Woiwurrung Aboriginesstammes Wurundjeri - Baluk, that you can with a waterfowl sanctuary ' translate. Its current name was given the creek in honor of the former banker John Gardiner from Melbourne, in 1836 settled at the mouth of Kooyongkoot Creek in the Yarra River.

Run

The Gardiners Creek is 17 km long.

The creek rises in the suburb of Blackburn, where pour many small creeks and rivulets in the Blackburn Lake. Then it flows south through Box Hill South Burwood and Ashwood after. Approximately at the mouth of Scotch Mans Creek in Malvern East, he turns his course to the northwest and flows through Ashburton, Glen Iris, Malvern and Kooyong to lead to Hawthorne in the Yarra River.
