Garland T. Byrd

Garland Turk Byrd (* July 16, 1924 in Reynolds, Georgia; † 31 May 1997), an American politician and from 1959 to 1963 was the fourth Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.

Byrd served during the Second World War from October 1942 to October 1945 in the United States Army. When he retired from the active, he held the rank of captain and was honored with the Silver and the Bronze Star. Byrd attended from 1946 to 1948, the University of Georgia and received his LL.B. degree in 1948 from Emory University. In the same year he began to work as a lawyer in Butler. 1952 to 1954 he was a member of the Georgia Citizens Council and was from 1947 to 1949 a member of the House of Representatives from Georgia. In 1949 he resigned to become assistant director of the State Veterans Service Department. His father Dozier Eugene Byrd then took over his seat vacant and remained until 1954 deputy in the House of Representatives. January 13, 1959 to January 15, 1963 Garland T. Byrd had held the office of Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.

Byrd was since August 22, 1946 with Gloria Elizabeth Whatley ( born 1925 ) married.
