Gaston de Saporta

Marquis de Louis Charles Joseph Gaston Saporta ( born July 28, 1823 in Saint -Zacharie, † January 26, 1895 in Aix -en- Provence) was a French palaeobotanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Saporta ".

Life

Saporta studied at the Jesuit College at Freiburg together with Philippe Matheron ( 1807-1899 ). As a student of Adolphe Brongniart, he published numerous Tertiary floras from the French-Belgian space and supplemented by his work of the then leading palaeobotanist Oswald Heer and Constantin von Ettingshausen.

De Saporta was based largely Darwinian theory of evolution in the field of paleobotany.

He wrote several important works, such as " Plantes jurassiques " (1883-1885), " Origine paléontologique of abres cultivés ou par l' homme utilisés " ( 1888). His work " Le monde des plantes avant l' apparition de l' homme " was translated into German by Carl Vogt (1881 ).

Regional focal points of de Saportas investigations were the floras of Aix -en- Provence, Manosque, Sézanne and gentle. The Paläozänflora of gentle plays an important role in his reflections on the origin of the polar tertiary vegetation.
