Gastre

Gastre is the capital of the department Gastre in Chubut province in southern Argentina. In the classification of municipalities in the province of Chubut Gastre is classified as a rural municipality ( Comuna Rural).

History

The settlement of the area took place in 1904 and continued to develop slowly.

The town's name derives from the tehuelche expression Gástrrek, with a widespread shrub is known in the region. The tehuelche used its ground roots to it mixed with fat or water to eat. Another meaning of the place name could be striped square.

Economy

In Gastre livestock farming dominates in the form of sheep farming. The area is rich in minerals (lead, silver, zinc, copper, gold ), worked in the mine Angela. In the zone of the Comisión Nacional de Energía facilities Atomica ( CNEA ), who studied the possibility of establishing a permanent nuclear waste over many years exist.
