Gatehead, East Ayrshire

Head Gate is a village in the Scottish Unitary Authority East Ayrshire. It lies about 35 km south-southwest of Glasgow on the banks of Irvine, who is at this point the border between East and South Ayrshire, near the border with North Ayrshire.

Previously, coal was mined in Gate Head. In 1812 the distillery Old Rome was founded near Gate Head. It lay south of Irvine so on today's territory of South Ayrshire. However, at that time consisted of only one Community Ayrshire. The distillery often was in financial difficulties and was finally abandoned in 1851 at the latest.

The train station of Head Gate was opened in 1812 and was stopping at the Kilmarnock and Troon Railway. In 1969 he was closed.
