Gavin Lambert

Gavin Lambert ( born July 23, 1924 in East Grinstead, Sussex; † July 17, 2005 in Los Angeles, California ) was a British-American author and screenwriter.

Life

Lambert spent his education at St. George 's School and the Cheltenham College. He then took a degree in English Literature at Magdalen College at the University of Oxford. Here he met Lindsay Anderson, with whom he later wrote several screenplays and worked also in other contexts. After a year, Lambert broke off his studies. He first worked as a writer for commercials and published his first short stories.

In 1947 he was, together with Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz for founders of the magazine sequence. Later he moved to the magazine Sight & Sound, as its editor, he worked from 1950 to 1954.

In 1954 he turned to screenwriting and there was the movie Another Sky, for whom he worked as a director for the first and only time. In the late 1950s he also drew on the invitation of Nicholas Ray, who had seen his film to Hollywood. Until 1991 he was involved in about 20 film and television productions as a screenwriter. In addition, a number of non-produced screenplays, which are found in his estate.

In 1959 he published with The Slide Area: Scenes of Hollywood Life, his first book, a collection of short stories. In the 1960s and 1970s was followed by several fictional books. In his literary work Lamber let his observations of Filminsdustrie and the associated life in Hollywood incorporated. Later, he also wrote several biographies of personalities in Hollywood, including Norma Shearer ( 1990), Alla Nazimova (1997) and Natalie Wood ( 2002).

In 1964, Lambert received the citizenship of the United States.

In the period of 1972 to 1990 he lived mainly in the Moroccan city of Tangier, after which he settled in Los Angeles.

Awards (selection)

For the screenplay for Sons and Lovers he and TEB Clarke were nominated in 1961 for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in the category. At the Academy Awards in 1978 held his second Oscar nomination, this time together with Lewis John Carlino for her work on I've Never Promised You a Rose Garden.

The National Board of Review Lambert recorded in 1997 with the William K. Everson Film History Award for his biography of Alla Nazimova.
