Geert van Turnhout

Gérard de Turnhout, also Gerardus van Turnhout (* 1520 in Turnhout, † September 15, 1580 in Madrid ) was a Franco- Flemish composer of the Renaissance.

Gérard de Turnhout began his career in 1545 as a choirboy and later as choirmaster at the cathedral of Antwerp. In 1558 he became the choirmaster, a year later Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Lier. In 1562 he was back in Antwerp at the Notre-Dame church choir director and in 1563 he took over the post of Kapellmeister, in succession to the deceased predecessor Antoine Barbe.

At the behest of King Philip II of Spain in 1571, he traveled in the company of some choir boys, among them Jean Leroy and Philippe Rogier, to Madrid. There he was in 1572 he.
