Geeveston

Geeveston is a small town in the south of the Australian state of Tasmania. It lies on the Huon River, 62 km south of Hobart, making it Australia's most southerly administrative center. The city is part of the Local Government Area Huon Valley Municipality and heard both in elections to the Australian House of Representatives as well as where the Tasmanian Parliament for the Division of Franklin.

History

The city was named after William Geeves, an English settler who has been assigned by Lady Jane Franklin in the country at that time Lightwood Bottom -called ( by the prevailing type of wood ) area. 1842, the settlement Geeves was founded and renamed 1861 in Geeves Town. It later became Geeveston.

Geeveston is located on the Huon Highway ( A6) and is considered the gateway to the Hartz Mountains National Park. In 1982 it was closed and thus ruined the local economy. The Forest & Heritage Centre, a visitor center, which shows the history of the timber industry of the area, is also located in Geeveston.
