Geneva Citizens' Movement

The Mouvement Citoyens Genevois ( Geneva German citizens' movement, Italian Movimento dei Cittadini Ginevrini ) is a right-wing populist protest party in the Swiss canton of Geneva. Under the name Mouvement Citoyens Romands the party intends to be active in the other cantons in French-speaking Switzerland.

History

The Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG ) was founded in 2005 by former SVP member George Letellier and by former LPS politicians Éric Stauffer as parochial protest party. At the cantonal elections on 9 October 2009, the MCG reached 17 of the 100 seats of the Great Council of Geneva and rose to become the second largest party in the canton of Geneva.

After these successes the MCG announced to be active throughout the French-speaking Switzerland. Meanwhile, there are (very weak) sections in the cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel. The Mouvement Citoyens Vaudois ran in the spring of 2011 in Lausanne and Yverdon- les- Bains, but reached in each case only 1% of the vote and no seats. Likewise, it was unsuccessful in the Vaud cantonal parliament elections of 11 March 2012. Neuchâtel The MCR- section reached in May 2012 in the elections to the Parliament of Neuchâtel city around 3% of the votes and was also without seats.

The Swiss Parliament elections of 2011, the MCG reached 9.8% in the Canton of Geneva. Thus, it remained well below its results in the cantonal elections. With Mauro Poggia an MCG member was elected to the Swiss National Council for the first time. In the canton of Vaud, where the Mouvement Citoyens Romands had also submitted a list, it was, however, only 0.5 % of the vote.

Political positions

The MCG sees himself on the political spectrum as neither left nor settled right. The party is also known by populist positions in the form of aggressive campaigns against commuters from neighboring France and immigrants. In social issues, the party takes unlike direct competitor SVP a left-wing positions.
