Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte Cardinal ( born April 10, 1851 in Naples, † February 16, 1948 at the Vatican ) was initially a Vatican diplomat, later a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte was the son of Angelo Granito, the fourth Marquess of Castellabate, and Paolina Pignatelli y Aymerich Francesca, the seventh Princess of Belmonte and ninth Duchess of Acerenza, to the world. He studied in Naples trays Catholic theology and philosophy, received his doctorate in theology and received on 7 June 1879, the ordination. From 1879 to 1886 he worked as secretary of the Archbishop of Naples, from 1886 to 1891 he was editor of the newspaper " La Libertà Cattolica ".

On November 27, 1911 Granito Pignatelli was received by Pope Pius X as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in the College of Cardinals and raised 1915 Cardinal Bishop of Albano. Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte was Honour and Devotion Grand Cross - Bailli of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from December 1937 to 1938 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome, the Order of Malta. In 1937 he was Cardinal Patronus of the Order of Malta and remained so until his death. Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte died on February 16, 1948 at the Vatican and was buried in the crypt of the Capuchin monks in the cemetery " Campo Verano " in Rome. He was the last surviving cardinal who had been appointed by Pope Pius X, and he was to his time of death of the oldest cardinal of the world.
