He was the eldest son of Count Gottfried II Ferréol of Gâtinais († 1042/45 ) and his wife Ermengarde of Anjou († 1076 ), daughter of Count Fulk III. Nerra of Anjou († 1040 ).

Life

Gottfried's paternal family came from central France where they were as counts of Gâtinais and Viscount of Orléans followers of the French kings. Gottfried followed after this inheritance after the death of his father. Soon, however, he entered the service of his maternal uncle Count Geoffrey II Martel of Anjou, one of France's most powerful men of his time, and was entrusted with this rule over the Aquitanian Saintonge. After the death of his uncle in 1060 Gottfried followed him in his extensive possessions.

At the beginning of his reign succeeded Gottfried and his brother Fulk 1062 to repel an attack by the Duke William VIII of Aquitaine on the Saintonge. Unlike his uncle, who did not interfere in church issues, Gottfried came with the clergy of his domains in conflict as to the investment of the Episcopal See in Le Mans. For this reason Gottfried was important because he was able to maintain its influence in the county of Maine with a weighted him bishop, where his rival was able to use Duke William II of Normandy his eldest son Robert shorts as Count 1063. After Gottfried Abbey Marmoutier he was excommunicated in 1067 fell from a papal legate.

This took his younger brother Fulk of enforce caught by the rule in Anjou to usurp and Gottfried. From this escape quickly defeated Gottfried against his brother in a fight in Brissac- Quincé ( April 1068 ) and was imprisoned again in the castle of Chinon. It was only released in 1096 on intervention by Pope Urban II, he died a short time later.

Gottfried was with Julienne, daughter of his vassal Hamelin of Langeais, married with whom he had no children.
