Geoffrey Paul

Geoffrey John Paul ( * March 4, 1921, † 11 July 1983) was a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1981 to 1983 Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England.

Paul visited the Rutlish Grammar School. He studied at Queens ' College, University of Cambridge and at King's College London. His priestly career began as a vicar ( Curate ) in Little Ilford. He then went as a missionary priest to India. There he worked in Palayamkottai in Tamil Nadu in southeastern India and later in Kerala. In Kerala, he joined the faculty of the Kerala United Theological Seminary in Kannammoola; 1961-1965 he was there Headmaster and Head ( Principal ). After his return to Britain he became a member of the cathedral chapter and Residenzkanoniker ( residentiary Canon ) at Bristol Cathedral.

In 1977 he was ordained a bishop. From 1977 to 1981 he was known as " Bishop of Hull " suffragan bishop in the Diocese of York in the Church of England. In this role, Paul as bishop under the leadership of the Archbishop of York, Stuart Blanch was responsible for the governance of the diocese. In 1981, he was, as the successor to Ross Hook, Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England.

He belonged to the evangelical wing of the Church of England. Paul was a recognized expert on the New Testament; he wrote, inter alia, the book A Pattern of Faith ( released in 1986 ). He was considered " a brilliant preacher and visionary churchman. "

Paul was married and the father of five daughters. His daughter Hilary Jane Paul married in 1981 the future Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
